Following a visit to our club by Fiona Turner, Rotary’s ShelterBox Engagement Officer, Pershore Rotarians decided the time was right to “make time, make tea, make a difference this year” and celebrate ShelterBox’s 25th anniversary by holding a ‘Tea in a Tent’ event of our own.
On a scorching hot Saturday in July, we held our Tea in Tent event – cakes, scones and strawberries were served along with gallons of tea, coffee and cold drinks. Rotarians helped to serve all the goodies and of course washed everything up and moved tables, chairs etc so everything was left clean and tidy.
We “borrowed” the café and kitchen from Wick Care Farm and greatly appreciated the support from owner, Isobel Meikle. Wick Care Farm is set in 270 acres of rural farmland near Pershore and supports adults and young people through engagement with a variety of farm-based activities that benefit both their physical and mental health.
The event raised £450, enough to buy a tent for a family of 10. However, President Lynne later received a phone call from someone, so impressed by the ShelterBox leaflets and the charity’s work, who gave her a cheque for £150. We shall now be sending £600 to ShelterBox.
President Lynne said” A small event in the community helps to get the wider message of what Rotary is all about across in a relaxed manner”
In its 25 years, ShelterBox has supported over 3 million people in over 100 countries. These tents provide shelter for the 120 million people around the world hit by earthquakes, floods, wars or other disasters.
