Supporting our Environment
Rotary's 7th Area of Focus
During April, Rotary clubs around the world come together to protect our planet, support environmental conservation, and strengthen local sustainability.
Here’s how Rotary is making a difference:
- Action Projects - Rotarians roll up their sleeves to clean up plastics from waterways, plant trees and restore local ecosystems.
- Environmental Sustainability - supporting sustainable agriculture, responsible fishing and environmental education for future generations.
- Climate Action - working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect coastal and marine environments.
- Global Impact - through the Rotary Foundation, over $18 million in grants has supported environmental causes in the past 5 years!
Rotary encourages all clubs to be stewards of the environment—creating lasting, positive change for a greener future.

Protecting Our Shared Environment
Rotary shares a deep commitment to protecting our common legacy: the environment.
We support initiatives that strengthen the conservation of natural resources and advance ecological sustainability—helping communities and nature thrive together.
- Empowering Communities - we help communities embrace local solutions, develop innovative service projects, and access grants and resources to create lasting impact.
- Taking Action - working side by side with communities, Rotary delivers projects that improve the environment and transform lives.
- Why It Matters - healthy ecosystems support better health, create economic opportunities and even help build peace.
Together, we can foster harmony between people and nature for a brighter, greener future.

Celebrating Earth Day & Taking Action Together

Fifty years ago, on 22 April 1970, the very first Earth Day sparked a global movement —leading to major environmental protections in the United States and inspiring countries around the world to follow.
Every year since, Earth Day has been a powerful reminder to come together, take action and protect our planet
As people of action, Rotarians have long been part of this mission—tackling challenges like climate change that threaten food systems and fighting pollution that harms our air and water. Through strong networks and innovative thinking, they continue to create real, lasting impact.
One inspiring example is the End Plastic Soup project. What began as a simple canal cleanup in Amsterdam has grown into a movement—collecting and recycling plastic waste and raising awareness across the Netherlands and beyond.
