Rich Hughes Trio at Pershore Abbey

It’s been a lively start to the year for Pershore Rotary, with February and early March packed full of quizzes, skittles clashes and a toe-tapping night of jazz — all in support of good causes across the community.

The highlight of our recent events calendar came on Saturday, 7 March, when Pershore Abbey came alive with the vibrant sounds of jazz. Rich Hughes and his Fugue & Groove Trio delivered a dazzling evening of jazz-inspired interpretations of classical favourites, from Bach to Beethoven. Many pieces echoed the style of Jacques Loussier’s famous jazz take on Bach’s much-loved ‘Air on a G String’, remembered by many as the soundtrack to the iconic Hamlet cigar adverts of the 1960s.

The concert drew strong support from jazz enthusiasts and followers of the trio, raising funds to help support and encourage local music in the Pershore area. Local groups will soon have the opportunity to apply for funding support through the initiative.

The action began with a successful Quiz Night at the Queen Elizabeth Inn, bringing together regular QE quizzers, Rotary members and local supporters. The evening raised an impressive £525 for Wick Care Farm, which provides farm-based activities that help adults and young people improve their physical and mental wellbeing. The funds will go towards creating a new “Quiet Room” at the farm — a welcome addition to its growing facilities.

Pershore Rotary had previously presented the Queen Elizabeth Inn with a Rotary Certificate of Appreciation, recognising the pub’s role as a thriving, community-run hub at the heart of village life. Presenting the award to Mark Cieslik, Pershore Rotary President Lynne Raymer praised the team for their outstanding service, dedication and commitment to supporting community projects.

Pershore (Winners!) with Worcester Vigornia Club at the Saracen’s Head

Meanwhile, the competitive spirit was alive and well as Pershore took part in Rotary’s inter-club skittles competition. Two matches were played at the club’s new home venue, the Blue Bell Inn & Gurkha Pub at Ryall, where Pershore came out on top in closely fought contests before teams enjoyed a celebratory spread of Gurkha curries and warm hospitality from the Blue Bell team.

A third match at the Saracen’s Head in Worcester produced another Pershore victory — with one memorable moment seeing a Pershore player score 13 with his first bowl of the evening, knocking down all nine pins with two balls and adding four more with his third. Although our fourth match ended in defeat, the club enjoyed a strong run, plenty of friendly rivalry and the discovery of a superb new skittles venue.
